December 2025: The Best Trails and Outdoor Activities in Tampa
One of the best parts of life in Tampa is how easy it is to get outside. With cooler temperatures in December and plenty of sunshine, now’s the time to soak up the season with a bit of adventure to take advantage of the Florida lifestyle! Whether you’re spending time visiting family, planning a fun day out with friends, or simply in need of a solo nature reset, Tampa’s outdoor scene stays vibrant the whole year round.
So what’s on my shortlist? From zip lining and paddleboarding to relaxing strolls and waterfront dining, here are 10 of the best outdoor activities in Tampa you can enjoy like a local!
1. Zip Through the Trees with Empower Adventures
If you’ve ever wanted to zipline over water and take in expansive views of Tampa Bay from an observation tower, this is the place. Empower Adventures offers 3,000 feet of zip lines, suspension bridges, and a ropes course right above the scenic Mobbly Bayou Wilderness Preserve.
This one’s great for teens, adults, and anyone looking to do something a little different. It’s definitely a memory-maker!
2. Explore Nature on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail
If a walk or bike ride is more your style, the Upper Tampa Bay Trail is a local favorite and accessible for all nature lovers. This well-maintained, paved “urban” trail stretches nearly 14 miles in two separate sections, winding through shaded forests and creeks. It’s perfect for strollers, dogs, and weekend wanderers alike. With plenty of rest areas and restroom access along the way, this is one of the most accessible trails in Tampa for the whole family.
Here are a few other popular hiking trails in and around Tampa worth checking out:
- Courtney Campbell Trail: Scenic 9.5-mile trail that runs alongside Tampa Bay, offering panoramic water views and a pedestrian bridge perfect for biking, walking, or jogging.
- Flatwoods Loop Trail (Flatwoods Park): A shady, paved 7-mile loop with a peaceful wilderness feel. Great for biking, strollers, or spotting wildlife like deer and birds.
- Al López Park Trail: Located near Raymond James Stadium, this easy 1.2-mile loop features a paved path through forested wetlands with plenty of benches and rest areas.
- Lettuce Lake Park Boardwalk Trail: A 1.2-mile boardwalk and trail combo ideal for birdwatching, photography, or peaceful weekend walks. Includes an observation tower overlooking the Hillsborough River. There are also opportunities for kayaking and canoeing in this picturesque area.
- Bayshore Boulevard Linear Trail: One of Tampa’s most iconic walks: a 4.5-mile stretch of sidewalk along the waterfront with views of the bay, downtown, and some of Tampa’s most beautiful homes.
3. Stroll Through Tampa’s Only Botanical Garden at Eureka Springs Park
For a peaceful walk surrounded by lush greenery, head to Eureka Springs Conservation Park, a hidden nature gem just east of Tampa. Originally founded as a private garden by botanist Albert Greenberg, this 31-acre park is now the only botanical garden in the Hillsborough County park system.
You’ll find a tranquil boardwalk through a cypress and maple floodplain forest, a gorgeous rose garden, and even a tropical greenhouse. The shaded walking trails and quiet picnic areas make this a perfect spot for reading, birdwatching, or a low-key weekend reset. There’s also a rentable pavilion and a lovely pergola ideal for small events or outdoor weddings.
It traditionally costs only a couple of dollars per vehicle to enter, and dogs are welcome on leash. Just note: bikes, scooters, and running aren’t allowed; this space is meant for slowing down and soaking in the scenery.
4. Paddle Through the Mangroves at Weedon Island Preserve
Just a short drive from Tampa in St. Pete, Weedon Island Preserve is a must-visit for paddleboarders and kayakers. Glide through peaceful mangrove tunnels, spot native birds and fish, and experience the calm beauty of Florida’s natural ecosystems.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, this is one of Tampa Bay’s most relaxing outdoor adventures.
5. Ride a Horse Through the Water at Cypress Breeze Farm
Yes, you read that right: horseback riding through the water.
At Cypress Breeze Farm, just outside of Tampa near North Skyway Park, you can take a guided ride along the beach and even into the shallows with your horse. It’s an unforgettable combination of trail ride and beach experience, and it’s open year-round.
6. Paddle or Pedal: Explore Tampa from the Water
Looking for a fun way to break a sweat and take in some waterfront views? Tampa’s downtown waterways offer the perfect blend of low-impact exercise and outdoor discovery.
Water Biking with Riverwalk Boating Company
If you want to cruise the river without getting wet, Riverwalk Boating Company offers water bikes and CraigCat mini boats for a laid-back, family-friendly adventure. It’s a unique way to see the city skyline (especially at sunset!) and a fun twist on traditional fitness.
Paddleboarding with Urban Kai
Prefer to stand and glide? Urban Kai offers stand-up paddleboard (SUP) lessons, tours, and rentals right from the Tampa Riverwalk and their second location in St. Pete. Whether you’re brand new or experienced, you’ll enjoy a scenic, core-strengthening ride past some of Tampa Bay’s most iconic waterfront spots. It’s the perfect way to experience the city, get in low-impact exercise, and learn a new skill.
7. Hop Aboard the Pirate Water Taxi
More than just a boat ride, the Pirate Water Taxi is a fun way to see the city. With over a dozen stops between Sparkman Wharf, Armature Works, and downtown parks, you can hop on and off as you explore. Kids love it, and it’s a great way to skip parking headaches at major spots.
And if you’re looking for something fun to do as a group, eBoats Tampa allows you to rent an electric, environmentally friendly boat for groups of up to 10 passengers to coast along the bay. Sail on your own or with a guide at almost any time of day.
Plus, during the holiday season, the Riverwalk is lit up with festive displays, and the views from the water are absolutely spectacular.
8. Stroll the Tampa Riverwalk
If you’re looking for a scenic no-brainer option, the iconic Tampa Riverwalk is a local staple. This 2.6-mile waterfront path offers downtown skyline views, public art, splash pads, and easy access to parks, restaurants, and museums. You can walk, bike, push a stroller, or just relax on a bench with a view. It’s the perfect place to experience what Tampa offers residents, serving as a one-stop shop for a romantic date night and trail activities.
Check out Armature Works, Sparkman Wharf, and the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park to relax on the grassy field or cool off on the splash pad. Don’t miss the holiday events (especially the tree lighting ceremony) and Sunday markets popping up all season long!
9. End Your Day with Relaxing Waterfront Dining and Gorgeous Views of Tampa Bay
After a full day outdoors, there’s no better way to wind down than with good food and a water view. Tampa’s culinary scene is rich with spots that let you keep the outdoorsy vibe going long after the sun sets. Here are a few favorite local haunts:
- Salt Shack on the Bay is a small oasis in South Tampa with gulf-to-table food, ocean breeze, and views of Old Tampa Bay from the patio. Arrive by car or boat and enjoy the day under a Florida palm tree while you sip on a signature cocktail.
- Ulele overlooks the Hillsborough River and serves native-inspired food and drinks. Order a drink in a special cup, which allows you to take it with you as you move on to your next attraction along the Tampa Riverwalk.
- Anchor & Brine offers a more refined dining experience with a menu focused on coastal cuisine and small plates. Its open-air terrace sits right on the water, making it ideal for date night or celebratory dinners with out-of-town guests. Note that it’s attached to the Tampa Marriott Water Street.
- Whiskey Joe’s on Rocky Point is ultra-casual with authentic Florida flavor. It’s got open-air seating, live music, and beachy cocktails, all just steps from the sand. Come by boat or by car. Flip-flops are welcome!
10. Live-Like-the-Locals Bonus Tip: Worth-the-Drive Adventures
If you’re up for a quick road trip, here are a few other things on my radar that I love to share with all my clients.
- Tarpon Springs (45-minute-ish drive): A unique Greek heritage, sponge docks, and access to Anclote Key Preserve for nature lovers. The Distillery is a highlight, offering craft cocktails and tours that pull back the curtain on creating spirits.
- Safety Harbor (25-minute-ish drive): A charming town on the upper west side of Tampa, with trails, parks, and a cultural center, ideal for a relaxed half-day outing.
- St. Pete Pier (35-minute-ish drive): A top destination in nearby St. Petersburg, the newly renovated St. Pete Pier features 26 acres of walkable waterfront, public art, playgrounds, restaurants, and unbeatable views of Tampa Bay. Perfect for a family day out, sunset stroll, or even a quick paddle launch nearby.
One to Watch: Ballast Point Park (Undergoing Restoration)
One of South Tampa’s gems, Ballast Point Park is a quiet spot with a long fishing pier, playground, splash pad, and panoramic views of Hillsborough Bay. The pier experienced damage from hurricane season last year, but the restoration process began in September. It’s getting all sorts of amazing upgrades, from the fish cleaning tables to plumbing and electrics. It’s a peaceful place to spend a morning or afternoon with your dog, picnic blanket, and camera, so keep it on your watchlist for its grand reopening.
